Estimated reading time: 5 – 8 minutes
Writers often spend hours perfecting their craft in solitude. When I came across the article “21 Designer Workspaces” I found myself wondering where other writers spend the majority of their time creating. So my call is for all writers, regardless of genre, to please submit a picture of where you write at cdc@claudiadchristian.com.
It can be inside/outside/wherever you go to do your thing. Please include your name and website (if you have one.) You can also include a brief description if you wish.
To start things off, here’s where I spend the majority of my days working:
1. Claudia D. Christian
As you can see from the numerous pics, I’m an absolute fanatic about my two boys and husband, so having them plastered on my wall gives me inspiration to keep writing.
Ipod is also a must. I can’t work without the music. Silence distracts me.
2. Remittance Girl
I write sitting cross-legged with my laptop on a couple of pillows in
front of me, on my Chinese daybed…seen here at night.I’m strange about my space. I don’t want any books or pics or anything
else around me. I don’t listen to music – in fact I have a problem
with any distractions at all.Might explain why I never finish anything.
3. DJ Young
Photo is attached of my old oak teacher’s desk, with my old Dell laptop that is now sadly being held together by copious amounts of duct tape. I don’t really like distractions, not even music when I’m writing, but I do like to have anything I might need close at hand.
4. City Different
An ugly picture, but anyway: Here’s my own little corner. I seldom write here, actually. I write in my head, and hold it there until it’s overflowing, and then scramble to a coffee shop or steal desperate time from my employer or some such. That probably accounts for why I write short, short things. But every night, I sit here for a little while, unpack my bag, unload my mind, and gather my wits. And every morning, for a little while, I sit here and plan and tweet something out into the world, to you and my other shining twitterati. So I don’t really write here, but I launch from here, and I land here. It’s a harbor.
5. Ken Miller
Nothing but a pack rat’s home. No intervention requested.
6. Skyler White
I work from home, from this desk in the corner of my bedroom. The books at arm’s reach change with the project, but there are always too many books, and sometimes I have to dig down to desk level. But you can’t beat the commute, and when I get stuck, there’s always the dishes or a shower to shift my focus from straight-on-and-blind to just-slightly-off-center-enough to see what’s been lurking. But home is an amplifier. When my work is going well, it goes better at home. When my work is going badly, I’d better get myself to Starbucks. If I’m editing. Austin coffee standard Green Muse if I’m plotting, and Spider House if I’m writing new words. Bennu is good for anything.
7. Penny Jane Goring
Where I write.
8. Marcella O’Connor
When I get stuck, I can look out the window and watch the cows eating.
9. Kirsty Logan
This is the kitchen table where my girlfriend and I work. I’m a writer, she’s a graphic designer, and we have matching MacBooks because we’re both geeks. Her side is the neat one with just the fruit bowl; mine is the messy one with all the notebooks and paperbacks and an empty cup. I feel that these are metaphors for our respective brains: hers is neat and healthy, and mine is just a chaos of loose papers.
10. Zeah Rose
Comfort is the first priority when setting up for a good writing session! I’ve never got the hang of writing on the computer… I think better with a pen in my hand.
